High recovery and chemical-free desalination using advanced electrodialysis schemes

Desalination has become a significant alternative water source due to the growing water demand and inadequate conventional water sources in many regions. With the available mature membrane and thermal technologies in hybrid desalination plants, there seems not to be much room for improvements in energy consumption and desalination costs. Thus, we believe other drivers for innovation can be: (1) decreasing the environmental impact by avoiding chemicals additions and effects of brine discharge, (2) creating valuable water streams or mining of the valuable compounds from brines, while avoiding excess amounts of invaluable compounds, and (3) increasing the added value of already used desalted water for a second use in agriculture or aquifer recharge.

In this project, we will advance on chemical-free electrodialysis (ED) configurations in hybrid desalination schemes for high water-recovery and salts reuse. The created desalination scheme splits the saline source water into demineralized product water and multiple concentrated waste streams, with the desired specifications for eventual post-processing and recycling. We aim to achieve these goals without adding (high amounts of) salts or other chemicals, to avoid unnecessary ion accumulation in brines onsite or in the product water. The expect product of this project enables to achieve desalination by manipulating ionic compositions with the feed water and electrical energy as the sole inputs.

Determining optimal riparian buffer zones in Uruguay: integrating ecological and socio-economic criteria

Riparian buffer zones (RBZ) are vegetated areas adjacent to surface watercourses. They are important for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems since they regulate the fluxes of sediments and nutrients from land to water, reduce the impact of flooding, and are the habitat for plants and animals of both systems. The present PhD project aims to develop a methodology for the optimal determination of the RBZs (that maximizes social welfare and/or minimizes costs), considering the ecosystem services provided, the opportunity costs involved and the environmental policy strategy to be implemented. We will focus on analysing the service of water quality improvement that the RBZs provide by operating as a natural barrier for sediments, pathogens and nutrient loads from adjacent lands. This ecosystem service is essential for the provision of clean water to urban, productive and natural systems.
The project is structured in four specific objectives:
Objective 1: Evaluate the efficiency of buffer zones as a measure to reduce the export of nutrients to watercourses, compared to a tax on fertilizers as an alternative measure.
Objective 2: Economically value water quality improvement provided by different combinations and scenarios of RBZs.
Objective 3: Evaluate the factors that determine the willingness of Uruguayan farmers and ranchers to participate in different types of environmental policy strategies for implementing RBZ conservation measures, such as mandatory buffer strips or payment for ecosystem services scheme.
Objective 4: Evaluate the cost-effectiveness and impacts on human well-being of different combinations of width, composition of RBZ and environmental policy strategy on a conservation measure of RBZ.

Syntrophic growth of anaerobic microbial consortia on one-carbon compounds

Microorganisms are the most abundant and diverse organisms on Earth. They live in communities that are capable of degrading complex molecules, and can be harnessed for the treatment of wastewater or the production of biogas. To exploit the full capabilities of microbial communities we must first understand how microbes interact with each other. A particularly important interaction for ecosystem stability is mutualism, which is a positive interaction that benefits all participating members. During my PhD project, we will apply omics approaches to study Moorella thermoacetica strains growing on C-1 compounds, together with a methanogenic partner (Methanothermobacter thermoautotrophicus). The aim is to uncover the molecular mechanisms behind this mutualistic interaction and its evolution.
