The influence of drinking water biofilms on water quality

Microbial regrowth in drinking water distribution or premise plumbing systems can cause problems like growth of opportunistic pathogens (e.g. Legionella pneumophila), esthetic complaints or regrowth parameters exceeding legislative guidelines. The microorganisms responsible for these problems mainly multiply in biofilms on the pipe wall and/or sediment and will alter the water quality once they are released in the water. This release of biofilm organisms in the water phase is largely unexplored and will be the focus of this PhD project. The influence of pipe material, hydraulics and water quality on the release of biofilm organisms will be studied using cultivation-based and ‘state of the art’ molecular microbiological methods.

Governing the transition towards sustainable industrial water supply in Vietnam

This PhD-project applies the triangle model of industrial ecology design to analyse specifically governance and institutions for fresh water innovation associated with selected technological innovations that are produced from other study as well as the interactions among water, energy and waste flow within selected Industrial Zones (IZs) and IZs with neighbourhoods in Vietnam. Within the framework of the research the institutional challenges are assessed by addressing the particular stakeholders through semi-structured expert interviews, document review and focus groups/workshops. In addition, based on synthesis of the data and insights, innovations in water reuse and multi-sourcing brackish water are identified. During this research there is contact between the technological and institutional stakeholders through workshops, focus groups, feedback sessions and other more individual meetings. This is a vital part of the research to guarantee the needed interaction and trans-disciplinary exchange of (new) knowledge and (new) insights.

Mechanisms and enhancement of LDPE and PLA degradation by earthworm’s gut microbiome in soils

This PhD project generally aims at exploring the possibility of in-situ biodegradation of microplastics by the gut microbiome of earthworms. The most commonly used non-biodegradable polymer (LDPE) and biodegradable polymer (PLA) for mulching films will be used in this project. The degradation mechanisms and potential enhancing methods will be explored.

Managed Aquifer Recharge with Marginal Water for Irrigation and Contaminant Attenuation

This thesis studies the environmental impacts of subsurface irrigation and drainage with treated wastewater. Subsurface irrigation and drainage is a new method of agricultural water management that falls under the umbrella of environmental technologies known as managed aquifer recharge (MAR). The use of treated wastewater means that contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are inadvertently released into the soil. Numerical models, verified with experimental data, show that subsurface irrigation with treated wastewater is not likely to lead to adverse effects on the surrounding environment or on the irrigated crops at an experimental implementation located in the Netherlands. Numerical modelling also reveals that if the biodegradation of CECs in the soil depends on mixing-dependent multicomponent biochemical processes, then it does not seem possible to simplify the problem by using assumptions such as first-order kinetics or soil homogeneity. Analytical solutions on the efficiency of MAR systems in general are also derived and validated.

Towards sustainable soil acidity management of Chinese croplands at regional level

Widely occurring soil acidification in Chinese cropland causes crop yield decrease and cadmium (Cd) accumulation in crops, mainly due to losses of base cations (BC) induced by nitrate leaching in response to the (over)use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers. Replacing chemical fertilizers by manure is an effective choice to reduce N fertilizer application and counteract losses of BC, elevating the soil pH to an appropriate level. Replacing fertilizer by manure application might however cause Cd accumulation in soils due to enhanced Cd contents in manure. Furthermore, the manure amounts may not be enough to counteract soil acidification, thus requiring additional lime inputs. The major aim of this project is to develop a sustainable management strategy for soil acidity of croplands at regional scale, in view of both crop yield decrease and Cd accumulation in crops, based on a process based modelling approach.
