Thermophilic blackwater treatment for safe recovery of organic carbon and (micro)nutrients

As the world’s population grows, so must food production. Efforts to increase global food supply by addressing soil deficiencies have resulted in a dependence on mineral fertilizers. However, a more holistic alternative could be application of organic fertilizers and amendments to improve soil quality. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive treatment option for recovery and recycling of carbon and nutrients from rich streams such as blackwater collected from water conserving source-separated sanitation systems, that could be channelled towards sustainable agriculture. Overall, this project aims to optimize the performance of (hyper)thermophilic treatment of blackwater to maximize the production of reusable recovered products, namely sludge, macro/micro-nutrients and energy.
