Intertidal flats in sheltered coastal areas provide us many ecosystem services, among which flood protection and carbon storage. These flats are severely influenced by the impacts of storm events. Now the climate is changing, due to enhanced greenhouse gas emissions, the intensity and frequency of storms is likely to increase. To understand what this means for intertidal areas, we must first understand how individual storm events influence the estuarine bed dynamics. We will do so by combining hydrographic measurements, video imaging and computer models.
