Ecosystems such as grasslands and forests and agroecosystems are the foundation for human well-being because they provide critical goods and services such as food, timber, clean water and climate regulation. Enhancing the services they provide can help address urgent environmental challenges, such as adapting to and mitigating climate change, reducing pollution and halting biodiversity loss. These nature-based solutions are an emerging and promising concept, but require knowledge on how to implement them without harming ecosystems. This research offers new scientific knowledge on quantifying ecosystem services and on how nature-based solutions can secure the sustainability of human activities and human well-being.
