The Netherlands experienced serious drought in 2018-2020 and such events are expected to increase in frequency due to climate change. Integrated hydrologic modelling is an essential tool to understand and predict these events and to aid in designing mitigation measures. Application of the current national hydrological modelling system (NHI) for integrated modelling has identified many opportunities for improvement. This study will contribute to the optimization of water management and allocation during drought events by investigating more flexible, accurate and robust modelling concepts for surface water, saturated zone, unsaturated zone, and water management.
