As permafrost thaws, carbon emissions from permafrost regions will increase. In the CARBOFLOW project, the carbon release from the permafrost into the groundwater will be parameterised under thawing conditions. In controlled soil column experiments, relative contributions of various (soil physical) parameters to carbon release from permafrost soils into the groundwater will be measured. The soil column results will be used to parameterise existing permafrost heat-transport models to include carbon releases.
We provide a disciplinary and multidisciplinary research programme aimed at advanced understanding of environmental problems and advanced training of PhD candidates in this field.
