Urban flooding has become a severe threat to human livelihood around the world. Besides, floods increase the mobilization of plastics into the environment which is a problem especially, in urban waterways. Although plastic pollution is an anthropogenic hazard, it is clearly related to flooding. The severity of urban flood risk is getting worse due to accumulation and blockage caused by these floating macroplastics in urban waterways thus creating a nexus between plastics and floods.
This project aims to explore the use of opportunistic sensing (Commercial Microwave Link for rainfall estimation and Citizen Science for plastic mapping) to break the nexus.
