The increasing occurrence of organic micropollutants (OMP) and their long-term presence in water presents an elevated risk for public health and ecosystems. Advanced treatment technologies such as filtration systems, oxidative techniques, and activated carbon have been studied and developed to remove OMP from water. However, these technologies are energy intensive. In this project, we will study a coupled system, comprised of a nanofiltration (NF) reactor and an, activate sludge (AS) reactor, in which the NF concentrate will be recirculated to improve the degradation of OMP present in wastewater. Our hypothesis is that the recirculation of the NF concentrate in the AS reactor will enhance the biodegradation of OMP.
