Salt intrusion and adaptation in the south-central coastal zones of Bangladesh under changing climate

Bangladesh is blessed with numerous islands along the Bay of Bengal. Climate-induced changes, such as rising sea levels and shifts in water balance impact the agroecosystems of this region through saltwater intrusion. Furthermore, elevated temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and increased [CO2] levels also affect agricultural productivity. Nevertheless, our understanding is currently limited regarding how these impacts will unfold in the future. This research aims to assess the impact of climate change on agriculture in the south-central coastal districts using advanced modelling techniques. Location-specific potential solutions will be identified by synthesizing farmers’ experiences, existing literature, and model-driven insights. The findings from this PhD project will contribute to promoting sustainable agricultural production in the south-central coastal area of Bangladesh.
