Field and residential exposure of pesticides: Integrated risk analysis on terrestrial ecosystem and rural residents

Pesticides have been intensively applied in the North China Plain, however little is known about levels of pesticides in the environment and the associated risks. This thesis aims to 1) investigate pesticide application patterns of major farming systems in the study region and the exposure risk to bees, 2) investigate pesticide distribution in topsoil and assess the ecological risks of pesticides to soil biota, 3) study the distribution of pesticides in the residential dust and assess the health risks to rural residents, and 4) characterize personal pesticide exposures to particulate and gaseous pesticides by integrating major exposure routes. This study found pesticides have been frequently misused by farmers and caused concerning exposure risks to bees and soil biota. Both farmers and bystanders were potentially suffered from chronic health risks with most of exposures originated from the non-occupational exposure.
