Process mining is a rapidly growing field of research. This is testified by an established research community, numerous publications and thousands of organisations applying process mining. Because of this interest, we now face a vast body of knowledge that spans multiple disciplines and covers a range of methods, tools, and techniques. A single individual may find it daunting to set up a new research line in this field. After all, it is difficult to oversee all relevant developments and to understand the different approaches available. To help and guide aspiring process mining researchers, this course aims at bringing them together.
To help and guide aspiring process mining researchers, the process mining research school aims at getting them in touch with experienced scholars from the field. The idea is to create a setting where participants can collect feedback on their ideas and develop these further during a week of intensive collaboration. Each morning, one process mining expert will give an overview of recent research in their field of study. The expert will facilitate a highly interactive discussion on one or two papers that the participants are asked to read beforehand. The afternoons will consist of discussions on papers submitted by the participants.
Each participant is asked to submit one short paper on registration for the summer school. Both a senior faculty member and a fellow participant will prepare a thorough review of that paper; they will also help develop the paper further. During this summer school, the participants will also have the chance to participate in a hands-on session to learn how to implement a process mining algorithm as a plugin in ProM (http://www.promtools.org). Next to the formal part of the program, there is plenty of opportunity for social interaction.
As organisers of the summer school, we aim at bringing together a diverse group of senior and junior researchers in terms of expertise, research approach, and domain focus. In this way, we hope to create an inspiring environment that will enable each participant to further develop their early research ideas.
